Marcin Szarpak, world champion and Ice King again!

23-01-2023

A great success! The Ice King broke new world records in the 250m and 1,000m.  He brought home four medals, including two golds, from the 5th World Ice Swimming Championships in Samoens, France. As a sponsor of the Ice King's trip to the championships, we are extremely proud of his achievement!

This year's World Ice Swimming Championships took place from 12-15 January in Samoens, France. The competition took place on the Lac aux Dames lake. Almost 500 winter swimmers from 41 countries took part in the competition.

Our protégé swam distances of 250, 500 and 1000 metres during the championships. He also competed in the 4 × 250 metre relay.

Marcin started the championship fight on Friday. In the afternoon, he competed over a distance of 500 metres. In freestyle, he achieved a time of 05:38.92. He thus broke his previous record by 0.05 seconds. As a result, he finished third, winning the bronze medal.

On the second day, another great excitement awaited us. It was on Saturday that the 1000m freestyle competition took place. Whether Marcin Szarpak would retain the title of Ice King depended on its outcome. In the men's category, 73 competitors competed. The moment came for the start and the exciting struggle of the best swimmers. The water temperature was just 3.70 degrees Celsius.

After fierce competition, the winner was announced: Marcin Szarpak world champion over 1000 metres! In free style, he won the gold medal with a time of 11:31.53. In doing so, he set a new world record. The Polish swimmer once again became the Ice King and broke a new Guinness World Record. He improved by 17 seconds on his last year's result from the 4th World Ice Swimming Championships, which took place in Glogow.

Sharing the news of the victory on social media, he thanked ABM for its support: "It is thanks to you that I can be here today". Defending the championship title was one of the record holder's dreams. By funding a trip to the World Championships, this was made possible. Congratulations to Marcin on his great victory! The Ice King is a real inspiration for us - he shows that dreams are worth pursuing. We pride ourselves on supporting people with passion.

The final day of the championship has arrived. On Sunday, Marcin competed in the 250 metres freestyle and the 4 × 250 metres relay.

He covered the 250m distance in a time of 02:36.99 and setanother world record, winning the gold medal. It is worth mentioning that he swam seven seconds faster than during last year's championships.

The culmination of the competition was the Polish 4 × 250 metres freestyle relay. Poland was represented by a team consisting of: Marcin Szarpak, Aleksandra Bednarek, Michał Tomaszowski and Paweł Bednarczyk. The four swimmers finished second with a time of 11:51.64, winning the silver medal.

The Ice King returned from the championships with four medals, but is already thinking about returning to training. This year's world championships are over, but the winter swimming season continues. The medallist has set his sights on further challenges and intends to take part in national competitions. He also plans to swim the Ice Mile, which is 1,609 metres in water temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius. We are planning a meeting with Marcin – more information soon.
